Why do frogs like St. Patrick's Day?
Because they're always wearing green
Why can't you iron a four-leaf clover?
Because you shouldn't press your luck!

The staff of The Viking Vault mourns the loss of senior Matt West and is grateful for the years we spent with him. In tribute, we are gathering a collection of memories and thoughts about Matt. These will be updated daily. If you'd like to submit a favorite memory, please jot it down and bring it to Mrs. Garee's room or email it to [email protected].
Jake Adkins:
"One day in May of freshman year, our class returned to AP Bio after already taking the AP test that marked the culmination of the year. Matt brought in a large tub full of cheese puffs and, after eating all those, we used the lid as a ball in a game of 'soccer' in the classroom."
Jessica Huff:
"Matt was a good guy. He always knew how to make you smile when you were having a bad day. Matt was always the star of the show. He was very good at football and always gave 110% out on the field. We always talked about cars, dirt bikes, and talked about how we needed to go riding together, but we never got the chance. We will all miss you, Matt! Until we meet again, fly high, Matt!
Bryant Garee:
His bonfire in 8th grade was the most fun we had that summer!
I remember when Matt hurt his head at the fair, and I was mad because I was afraid he'd be out of football for the whole season.
Dustin Shenberger:
Matt created a nickname for me ("Smiles"). We would always ride dirt bikes in groups, and it was a lot of fun. Matt would always make everyone laugh and smile. He was the best kind of friend. He would go ride into town and pick up pizza with Jared for us. He would have your back, always. We would always talk about cars. Matt loved his Camaro. We would talk about snowboarding and riding dirt bikes. He was there for you when you needed him, and he was good to everyone. We both experienced Jared's crash, and Matt drove his car home for him. This was when we were snowboarding. I'm always thinking about Matt; he was such a good person, and everyone misses him. He would always ask me how I'm doing and how things are, and we would just talk about all kinds of things.
Mikey Kimes:
I remember Matt having his big birthday parties in middle school, and I remember him being a really big part of the football field.
DeVonna Poole:
Matt used to wear these glasses that changed into sunglasses in the summer. The last memory I have of him was on his 18th birthday. He was cooking burgers with his best friend, my brother Devon. My mom came to wish him a happy birthday, and my youngest brother clung to him. I remember all three of my brothers smiling.
Nick Willeke:
Matt and I were best friends in the fourth grade. My best memory with him was us planning to show up early to each others' birthday parties and getting in giant trouble with our parents.
Nathan Davis:
Matt was a good-hearted kid who always knew how to make someone smile no matter how sad they were. He will really be missed.
Ronni Fleshman:
Sophomore year in English, we made Matt do his presentation twice because we all thought it was hilarious, even Mrs. Morvay.
Mrs. Morvay:
Matt West was loud, opinionated, and sharp as a tack. He made me cry from laughing multiple times, and was an enthusiastic leader in his tiny class of eleven kids, even if his tangents derailed class in a usually hilarious fashion. He was always up for discussion, and made a real impression on me as the person who would regularly stand up for others who were being put down. When I made the decision to leave Northridge, there were students that caused me real pain, knowing I'd no loner get to see them every day. Matt was one of those kids. I loved him very much and my heart breaks that he's gone. All my love and prayers go out to his family and the Northridge family.
Adreona Perkowski:
I'll never forget elementary school when Matt told me how he wanted to grow up and be able to live life fully for both him and his brother. He wanted to make people proud, and he accomplished that. He was so smart and sweet. Matt stood up for what was right, even if he stood alone. Trust me, I know. He was a great friend to me in middle school when I got bullied. He didn't deal with anyone's crap and he was such a great friend to everyone. He had great plans for his future, and it's a shame his life was lost so soon. Elementary and middle school we were pretty close, high school we separated some but he was still there to talk to. I wish I could have said bye one more time before moving ... But of course no one one could ever have known this would happen. I know that there are many hearts grieving right now and my condolences go to all of you and to the West family. May he rest peacefully.
Mrs. Garee:
I got to teach Matt both his freshman and junior years, and it was an honor every day. Matt was wildly enthusiastic about everything, very opinionated while maintaining an open mind, and always ready to stand up for someone else and his or her ideas. He came in and talked to me before class started, and when we were done and I called my usual "Have a great day, every body!" Matt was the one who said, "You too, Mrs. G." Every day. He was always willing to dig deeper, think harder, challenge himself, and I'm better for the time I spent in his company.
