Northridge basketball starts up
By Mat Scott
NORTHRIDGE – Winter sports season is starting up, which means that the Northridge High School basketball teams have started their 2013-2014 season. The boys’ team has been practicing since October, and has had two scrimmages.
Greg Wilson (’15), plays on the junior varsity team, and says that he “thinks there is room for improvement, but that the team will do fairly well.” Matthew Grindle (’14) believes that the varsity team will end the season with an even record.
The coaching staff for the boys’ teams are Ben Patrick as head coach, Chris Absten as the assistant coach, Coach Higgins for the JV, and Bill Goodman as the Freshman coach. The girls have Coach Rucker as head, Coach Higgins as JV, and Madi Hess as an assistant coach for both teams.
Mikaela Pankuch (’15), who has played for three years, says that she “really likes the group of girls and the new coaching staff. Coach Rucker pushes us really hard.” Pankuch also says this season will “be more successful than the last, but the competition will be harder because of moving to the LCL.”
Grindle says that the boy’s team “has a lot of talent and work well together.” He says that the coach “lets us make decisions on the court for our own benefit.”
The next boys’ game is December 3 at home against Johnstown, with the freshman game starting at 4:30pm, the JV starting at 6:00pm, and Varsity starting at 7:30pm. The girls’ next game is November 30 at home against Johnstown, JV at 1:00pm and Varsity at 2:30pm.

Northridge’s own Marathoner
By: McKenzie Messer
Jacob Adkins (’15) completed his first marathon in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon On October 20th, 2013.
Adkins trained for three months to run 26.2 miles in 3:37:00, including a bathroom break. His average was 8:19 per mile.
Adkins has always liked running, but this was his first marathon. He first ran cross-country in middle school.
Nearly 18,000 other marathoners ran: 12,000 in the half-marathon, and 6,000 in the full marathon.
“I’m looking forward to running cross country again at Northridge next year,” Adkins said.
