Winter break ideas
By: Gabrielle Evans Ever wonder what you should do over winter break so you're not bored out of your mind sitting at home on your couch, well here are a few ideas for you to do by yourself, a group of friends, or a few close friends. There is always the cheap option where you could stay home and make Christmas cookies, watch Christmas movies, and make hot chocolate. This could be with whoever or by yourself. What ever makes you happy. If there is snow on the ground you could always go to a hill with a group of friends and go sledding, or bring out your inner child and play in the snow and build a snowman or have a snowball fight. If you wanna go out and have fun there is always the movie theater. There are several around that you could go to.Easton, Polaris,Cinemark Stoneridge Plaza Movies 16, The Screens at the Continent,Marcus Crosswoods Cinema - Columbus, and many other it all depends on how far you want to travel. Other ideas might include going to the zoo lights with a group of friends or a date, going bowling, glow putt-putt, go to an arcade, laser tag, sky zone, take a road trip, have a photo shoot in the snow, have a movie marathon with your favorite movies, Christmas shopping, ice skating, go to a sports game, there's always place for you to go if you have money and a way to get there. You could also have a secret Santa or a white elephant with a group of friends, that always fun, but only if you make it fun! If you want to do something for someone else you could always volunteer to help somewhere, donate toys for children that won't get gifts this year, donate a meal to a family that can't afford one for Christmas. There are many different ways you can help people over the holidays, even just saying hello and smiling at someone can make their day better. Be creative with your break, do things you really haven't done before, maybe even try a restaurant you haven't before, or ever try a different culture of food. Don't just sit around all break and do nothing, get together with some people and go out and have fun! Make memories and have fun! always remember to make smart, safe decisions though. |

Mystery Reporter:
Apocalypse through hashtags
As I sit here in class making my best “yes of course I’m paying
attention to the lesson” face, behind it I am desperately compiling a list of ways to save humanity. Not that anyone would notice or anything. It’s not like I posted it on Twitter.
Let me whip out the ol’ soapbox.
I feel entirely disconnected from my class, and the rest of the
school for that matter, and it isn’t from lack of trying to initiate
conversation. Nobody looks up from their phone screen, much less outside of their own problems, to care about what’s going on in anyone else’s life. I think it’s a generational thing, but empathy is getting lost in text message carrier waves and ridiculous hashtags. People can’t be moved from their
self-absorbed stupor to respond any more than “Oh man, that bites.” Wow, so
deep. I know.
Take the N-Unit, for example. Unit? That’s cute. Where’s the unity? People are only standing there to look cool and (loudly) trash the other team. Showing support for the team, band, or cheerleaders is something that belongs in a cheesy teen movie. I know, I know, it’s cool not to care and all, but at some point reality is going to strike, and the ability to communicate, be part of a team, and act like something other than crazed zoo animals is going to be kind of important.
Yeah, okay, technically you’re all connected via social media, but “tbh,” that’s not actual conversation. Sorry to burst anyone’s bubble, but it’s actually just an opportunity for ego stroking. Social media is the fuel on the already scorching flame of narcissism. On top of that, how many hours are spent mindless stalking strangers? At what point does your life become someone else’s?
Many of my friends play chicken with the delicate line separating confident from self-obsessed arrogant egomaniacs. Believing in one’s abilities is awesome, but acting like a conceited jerk -shocker- is not. The complete disregard for others' feelings is disgusting, and I cannot understand why people think this is acceptable. Where does insensitivity get anyone?
You know what’s worse? The apathy. The sense of entitlement. The lack of motivation. The self-absorption that prevents any meaningful conversation. The first step to breaking out of this zombie state is genuinely feeling for others. It’s something severely lacking and needs to be addressed now instead of in the “real world.” Secondly, the walls of entitlement need to come down. You do not “deserve” anything. No one does. Except maybe karma, but that’s another article. Everyone needs to work for what they are given, and for what they want. If you’ve got dreams, don’t lose sight of them, and work hard to achieve them.
So that would be my PSA. You’re welcome, Northridge.

Juniors create year-long handshake
Jake Adkins ('15) and Greg Wilson ('15) have started a "secret" handshake that adds a new piece every day they do it. They plan to continue it all year, until it is too long to do all at once. Each issue will have a video of the newest additions as they come out.
As of October 29 the handshake is 46 seconds long.
