NORTHRIDGE - Basketball season is underway and promises to make the cold months more fun and exciting. Here’s what’s on tap for this season for both of our varsity teams.
THE BOYS
Key returns this year for the boy’s varsity team, in addition to coaches Brian Blume and Rob Chambers, are seniors Daniel Hatfield, Brandon Estep, Gunner Absten, Chris George and Tyler Rosshirt. Returning juniors include Jeremy Butt, William Cox and Nick Hatten. Sophomore Jackson Wilson will also play on the varsity team again this season. A key loss going into this season is Logan Garee (‘17), who will miss his senior year of basketball due to a broken back that he got playing football.
Major games this year will be playing against Heath, Johnstown, and Sheridan. Daniel Hatfield (‘17) says “ these teams have good rosters and good coaches and have for a while. Their programs are good, and we look forward to the match ups.”
Senior Chris George had a lot to say about the upcoming season: “This season should be exciting and has a lot of unknowns. We are capable of be a standout team and have a high ceiling when it comes to skill levels. Our offense is centered around three point shooting, which provides excitement by removing deficits and gaining big leads. Our defense is being stretched to full court press which will lead to excitement on both ends of the floor. I think this year we'll make a run in the playoffs and possibly put a banner on the wall.”
The team has high hopes for the season and plans to perform well right from the start.
THE GIRLS
Returning again this season to the varsity team are Head Coach Chad Scott, along with seniors Hallie Martin, Jenna Denune, and Veronica Reese.
Some key games this season will be Senior Night, Johnstown and Heath. “These schools have been big games because of how competitive they are. And we compete well with them and plan on winning these games, then Senior Night is always a big game because, well, it’s Senior Night,” said Martin (‘17).
Denune said she has high hopes this season and that the team is off to a good start, beating East Knox 40 to 33. Denune says, “We are a good team with good seniors. We have strong underclassmen, and we are underdogs, but we have an advantage. Everyone will over look us, and we come to every game ready to play and win.”
