Disney should have left Beauty and the Beast alone
By: Jason Turner
So Disney’s new Beauty and the Beast is out, and I'm not sure about it. The animated version is near perfect, and if you have not seen it I recommend you do. Regardless, the new version is out and it's bad ... not awful but bad.
For starters, the actress who plays Belle, Emma Watson - who might be better known as Hermione from Harry Potter - can’t sing. The Beast looks like he is wearing a Halloween costume, and don’t get me started on the servants! My gosh they look ugly except for the candelabra, Lumiere. This rendition is full of things that go nowhere, such as a magic book the enchantress gives the prince that takes him anywhere. Not only does this have no point other than showing what happened to Belle’s mother (which could have been via the mirror that shows you anything), it appears like the enchantress did that just to be cruel. This sends the message that no matter where he goes people will hunt him, cage him or sell him. It doesn’t matter since if the last petal falls, not only does the Prince get stuck as a monster but his help becomes inanimate. The cartoon version says that they are stuck as household items, not that they can’t talk.
The few flaws the cartoon has are more plain here like, why does the dog get turned into a foot stool? In the cartoon it’s a joke, but here I was confused. What is the point of this other than Disney to add some cuteness to make more money? Like I said the cartoon is near perfect and the movie has some flaws. It only adds a few songs, and the magic book, which as I already said is pointless except for a backstory for Belle which I like.
I feel there are some assumptions of a character being gay which I personally think is in bad taste because this is set in an earlier time so they had strict social taboos. There is some weird backstory for the Beast that I guess is there to explain why his help got cursed too, but like so many things in this movie, it is ultimately pointless as it follows the cartoon so closely and it’s the only one of these live action fairy tales that doesn’t try to improve on the original. All this is not helped by the scene where Belle sees her father in trouble and she doesn’t use the magic book.
This whole live action reboot thing seems lazy to me, anyway. Just make something new, Disney. In conclusion, just watch the animated version because it does everything right, and I love that about it.

13 RW: Not Mindless TV
By: Anna Edwards
Thirteen Reasons Why is a book and a TV show based off of that book that is causing some controversy. Thirteen Reasons Why chronicles the thirteen reasons Hannah Baker, a depressed high school student, commits suicide. All of these reasons are boiled down to particular people who did or said something that pushed her to kill herself.
This is incredibly controversial because the intended audience for this show is clearly not people with a mental illness (namely depression). This show's intended audience is obviously the neurotypical. While I don't take issue with this in and of itself, I would like to talk about the repercussions of a show like this.
This show is incredibly focused on the grimiest parts of depression and being suicidal, and, while this can be incredibly informative for people who don't experience this type of thing, it can be incredibly harmful for people who do have depression and are suicidal. People have been flocking to the internet talking about the harmful effects of this show on those suffering from depression and suicidal tendencies. A lot of people have been speaking out about how this show can be extremely triggering.
I have seen many people saying even that seeing such graphic things and relating to the show on such an emotionally disturbing level has caused some to slip back into depressive spells.
I do take other issues with the show, such as the way it shows suicide as a way to not only punish the people who have wronged you but a way to prove you were right all along, but - all that said - I do recommend this show to people who do not suffer from depression because it is a fairly accurate depiction of what it is like to experience being depressed and or being suicidal.. With my recommendation comes a warning, however: it can, at times, be very graphic, and if you are not mentally or emotionally prepared to witness some incredibly horrific events, then this is perhaps not the show for you.

Advice for cashing in on $ and food at grad parties
By: Austin White
Seniors, once you’ve put the work in and graduated from high school, it is a time to celebrate. You’ve completed a huge step in life and are moving to the next step, whatever that may be. Now is time to sit back, relax, and let your family friends come congratulate you and wish you luck at your graduation party.
Just don’t relax too much and miss the advantages of free food waiting out there at all the other parties.
Your own party may take some work ahead of time, but it all pays off in the end when everyone comes and gives you money. The day is really all about you, and you probably even get to pick your favorite food. If you want tacos, you get tacos; if you want a hog roast, have a hog roast; even hamburgers are possible … the sky's the limit!
This is also a time to see family and spend time with the ones you hardly see. You also get to say goodbye to friends and goodbye to the people who showed up that you wouldn’t have considered your friends. One awesome perk of graduating is people think they need to give you money to help send you off on your way, so they toss $20’s, or grandmas and grandpas maybe toss a $100 bill your way, and you make bank in addition to picking the food and holding your hard-earned diploma.
Of course, the last perk of this season in your life is going to other people’s grad parties. They usually draw a good crowd of people to talk to, they have tons of free food, and they usually have corn hole and little games to play. This is a steal because you can show up to someone's grad party who you’ve seen in the hallway like two times that whole year and stock up on food and leave. It’s the best way to get free food.
If you play your cards right, Graduation Season can be a holiday of its own.

10 summer concert tips
By: Kayla Butler
With the summer season quickly approaching, many students are making plans to attend the concerts of their favorite artists. For some, it may be their first “real” concert. Every concert is different, but there are some general rules that every music-lover should follow.
1. Be prepared
Depending on how early you are planning to get to the venue, you should definitely be prepared. Bring your phone charger, sunscreen, snacks, and water. If you’ll be waiting for a long period of time, bring some form of entertainment, like a board or card game.
2. Make friends
If you want to get a spot close to the stage, chances are, you’re going to wait a long time. Since you’ll be in line for awhile, try making conversations with the people around you. You’re all there for the same artist/band, so it is probably likely that you will have more in common with them, and you can pass the time by making conversation or playing games.
3. Be courteous
Don’t cut in front of anyone in line. Make sure to look out for other people, and if they need help, help them. It is common for people to get really dehydrated and pass out at the venue, so make sure you help them up if they fall. Don’t push or shove other people, either.
4. Be aware of your surroundings
There’s going to be lots of people all around you, so make sure you’re aware of them and what’s happening near you. If you feel like you need some air or water, don’t hesitate to find it. Depending on what type of concert you are planning on going to, there may or may not be crowd surfers, so especially pay attention to them, so no one gets hurt!
5. DRINK WATER
It is so easy to get dehydrated in such a small space with so many people. If you get too hot or too thirsty, you can pass out and get hurt. So, if you have water, drink it. Don’t have any? Get some.
6. Live in the moment
While it is fun to have videos and pictures to look back on later, I would recommend that you NOT record the entire show. I think you will have a better time if you experience the concert as it happens.
7. Go with someone you know
Going to a concert alone can be scary; you are in an unfamiliar place with lots of unfamiliar people. Bringing a friend or someone you know can let you have a more relaxing experience. Going with someone else can let you create memories that will last longer than show itself.
8. Merchandise
Before you go inside the venue, you need to decide if you want to buy merchandise, or get to the stage first. The factors in this really vary. It just depends on how many people are there and if you want anything. If you decide not to buy anything at the show, or if everything is sold out, you can always find merchandise online!
9. Exits
When you first get there, make note of where the exits are. This is really important for you to know in case you need to leave the venue for an emergency. Knowing the location of more than one exit will allow you to get out faster.
10. Have fun
No matter what time you got there, where your spot is, or how much money you spent, have fun! Each concert is a different experience that lets you create lasting memories. Try to have fun, let go of all your worries, and just enjoy the music.

Tips for a less stressful pre-prom experience
By: Caylee Lindsay
NORTHRIDGE- With prom season in full swing, high schoolers begin to form their groups and make post-prom plans. But for many, the most stressful part of this hectic day is getting ready.
For all of the ladies attending prom, getting ready takes patience (a lot of it). Hair and makeup alone takes up at least half of the day. Some people book appointments with professionals, while others attempt the challenge themselves. Either way, there’s no way to avoid the amount of time consumed prepping for your perfect night. Although it may require a heavy dose of patience, there’s no reason getting ready for prom should be stressful. Here are a few tips to help you stay calm during this hectic day:
1. Make an appointment for a professional to do your hair. Unless you’re some sort of expert who can execute a perfectly styled updo, not having to worry about doing your own hair alleviates some stress from your day. Just make sure your stylist has good reviews, find a hairstyle you like, and relax. “I have appointments for hair, makeup, and nails. I feel way less stressed getting it done professionally, and there’s definitely no way I could do it myself,” says Dayna Martin (‘18).
2. Makeup preferences differ from girl to girl. My advice would be to know your talents! If you feel confident in your makeup abilities, go for it. If you’re more of the I-have-no-idea-what-I’m-doing type of girl when it comes to makeup, booking an appointment with a professional makeup artist would be a good option. When it comes to makeup, it’s all about what you feel most comfortable doing.
3. This may seem obvious or even irrelevant in terms of prom, but it’s extremely important to eat a healthy breakfast and keep yourself hydrated throughout the day. If you don’t drink enough water or eat right, it may change your mood and increase stress.
4. Taking pictures with friends may be the only thing on your mind at this point, but make sure you have enough time to get pictures with your family! This is probably the nicest they’ve seen you dress in quite some time, so take advantage of the day and get some quality family photos.
5. My final piece of advice would be to take as many pictures throughout the night as you can! It may sound cheesy, but you’re not going to want to forget this incredible night.

Tips for a better ACT score
By: Katelyn Darby
After taking the ACT and getting your scores back, you may be wondering what you could do to improve your score. Whether you’re happy or not with your score, there’s always the possibility for improvement. The following tips may help you to raise your score:
1. Practice! Although it may seem obvious, taking practice tests is the best way to improve your score. Make sure you review your answers, though, because you won’t improve if you don’t know what you’re doing wrong.
