Soccer team proves themselves this season
By: Hugh Prentice
NORTHRIDGE – In the 2015 soccer season, the team has been proving themselves game after game.
Kevin Krotzer is the new coach for this season. He has been coaching middle school soccer until his son entered the high school as a freshman. After that he decided to coach soccer for the high school.
Changes haven’t phased the team, and they’ve performed very well this season. They’re record for this year is 4 wins, 2 ties, and 8 losses. That record is better than last year’s scores as the team is showing improvement this season. The Vikings started off slower than usual, but as the season progressed and they began to get comfortable and started to win and are now on a winning streak. The Varsity team runs with 11 players on the field with a few substitutes on the sidelines; some of the substitutes are Junior Varsity players as well, if it’s permitted. The Junior Varsity team also runs the same kind of set-up on the field: 11 players with a few subs on the team.
The team held open soccer training camps over the summer to help train every player in conditioning, coordination, and to help everyone get to know each other before the season got started. The members of the team got to spend a few days over the summer to train before the season, the team has done this for years before as well.
Christian Corwin (16’) says that “Everyone gets along on the team, it’s nice.”
Tournaments begin this coming week. Senior soccer players include Christian Corwin, Robi Patrick, Noah Tornes, Noah Anderson, Colin Remy, Skylar Pritts, and Kylor Kauahi.

Football team tackling season
By: Jamie Swickard
NORTHRIDGE – This season, the Viking football team has started off strong by already having more wins than in recent seasons. The million dollar question to their success is, how are they doing it?
During the off season, the team lifted weights five days a week from 8 to 10 a.m. Along with weight lifting, the boys did conditioning in order to make them faster on the field. Austin (Rusty) Utzinger (‘18) said, “The strength and conditioning we did over the summer has helped a lot because now we’re not trying to regain muscle we lost during the off season. We already have it.”
Another reason behind the Viking success is the team chemistry. Gage Linkous (‘17) said, “Our team has been together practically our whole high school career. We’ve been through all of the losses together and know how bad that feels, so we all have the same goal to not lose anymore, and anyone will do anything to reach that goal.”
William Cox (‘18) agrees with Linkous, saying, “Even though I’m one of the youngest on the team, I can still see the drive everyone has to win, and that rubs off on everyone, making us all work harder and give more even when we think we can’t.”
Expectations from the players have also helped make the 2015 football season so successful. Sam Doran (‘16) said, “Coach Hinkle expects a lot out of us. Even when we play great, he still has ways for us to improve our skills. We’re never content with where we’re at.”
Many can feel the change of attitude once they walk into the stadium. Logan Parker (‘16) said, “This year, there has been a major increase of intensity. People work hard because we want to win and we know we can win.”
Agreeing with Parker is Logan Garee (‘17) who said, “I can tell we’re stronger because we’re able to go up against and battle with teams who we couldn’t in the past. We’re surprising a lot of teams this year.”
The Viking’s record this season is 4-3 with wins against Washington Court House, Lakewood, Bradford, and Mt. Gilead. The Viking’s losses have been against Fort Frye, Johnstown, and Hicksville. The thre losses have not stopped the Vikings from giving up on a winning season.
With their winning record, the Vikings have a chance to make it to the playoffs. This is the first time in many years the Vikings have had such a chance. Parker (‘16) said, “Another incentive that is making everyone work so hard is that we all know we have a chance to go to the playoffs and possibly do well. We don’t want to screw those chances up.”
Brenton Ickes (‘16) agreed by stating, “Even though we have three losses, they are against strong teams that are 7-0 and 5-2. Our chances of making it to the playoffs this year are promising. We just have to continue to put in the work as the season goes on.”
The Vikings still have two more games to play before the official season ends and playoffs begin. They are hoping with some more wins under their belts, they will be able to be in the playoffs with a good draw.
