NORTHRIDGE- “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. I grew up playing teacher, and I just love to help people the way teachers do.” This is what the new Anatomy, Biology, and Advanced Biology teacher, Ms. Thomas answers when asked why she got into teaching.
Ms.Thomas came from Perry County, where she taught at Miller High School. There, she used to teach Anatomy, Biology, and an eighth grade science class.
Starting off her day, Ms. Thomas arrives at school around 6:50 a.m. to start preparation. Ms. Thomas chuckles, “I’m not a morning person so I always have to brew myself a cup of coffee to get me through the morning!”
Her day consists of Anatomy first period, followed by her favorite class to teach, Biology. Luckily for Ms. Thomas she teaches Biology fifth, sixth, and eighth period. She says she loves this class because it covers all types of sciences. Third and fourth period Ms.Thomas has a prep period and Advanced Biology. Once seventh period comes around Ms.Thomas is in her room having lunch with the Chemistry teacher, Ms. Carrie Baker.
Once her school day ends, Ms.Thomas meets with Ms.Baker and the new physical science teacher, Ms. Wright. Ms.Thomas states, “I love all the built-in teacher time Northridge gives the teachers and all the new things the teachers here are willing to try to give their students a better education.”
Many students love the new teacher. Josie Bunstine (’16), one of Ms.Thomas’s Anatomy students states, “Ms.Thomas is awesome! She’s so enthusiastic about teaching us and never fails to make my day start off right!”
Another student, Leyna Varney (’16), comments, “Advanced Biology has been so fun with her! Science isn’t my favorite subject, but she makes it so interesting and fun to learn about.”
Ms.Thomas loves her students as well. Ms.Thomas states, “I’m so happy all the students here have a great energy level and want to learn. I’m so appreciative for that.”
Ms.Thomas attended University of Findley to major in Education. There, Ms.Thomas swam competitively. She says her best memory from swimming in college was when she tied with another girl in the 100 free style and had to race her again. Ms. Thomas remembers, “I won the second race and I remember that feeling of not being able to go anymore because I swam so hard. It was the best feeling!”
In her free time, Ms. Thomas will be caught playing frisbee golf. Ms.Thomas says, “I love being in nature and the woods, and I love to go frisbee golfing so it’s everything I love in one!” She also loves to visit new amusement parks and scrapbooking every chance she gets. When she is with her friends, Ms.Thomas enjoys playing board games which she states, “gets very competitive sometimes.”
Throughout everything, Ms.Thomas says, “I enjoy my job so much and I love coming to work, which not everyone can say. The students and staff here are so amazing!”

Who is Emma Dann?
By: McKenzie Messer
(Photo: Emma Dann with her horse, Caba. Photo by J. Dann.)
Northridge- Emma Dann is a senior who enjoys many things, and to the regular outsider, the majority of her hobbies and interests would be a shock.
Starting her senior year, Dann started several new hobbies. Last year she tried out for Vocalise with the song “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men; she is also a part of women’s choir with many other Vocalise girls. This is her first year in choir and was inspired to join after doing the musical last year. One of her favorite tunes that they’re performing is an African tribal song.
Last spring when Northridge started lacrosse, Dann was one of the girls to join. She says that since it was everyone’s first year, it was a learning experience for them all. Dann says, “It was neat because we were all starting at the same level.” When lacrosse starts up again, she plans on playing for another season.
Cross country is a sport that bloomed this year, and Dann was one of many that decided to run with it. She started the sport because her brother Josiah did it and said it “looked like a lot of fun”. Each meet she beats her personal best, and she recently shortened her time to 29:33 at the Newark Invitational. Dann said her favorite part of cross country is having Mrs. Garee as her coach.
Dann’s current hobby is equestrianism. As a child, she started at age six and rode for two years but never competed. She stopped horse riding when her trainer moved away, but picked it back up last year around this time. Dann spent her summer competing and won various medals in all competitions, and in the Central Ohio Haflinger, won high point champion. She mainly competes in haflinger shows which consists of English and Western. Dann prefers English because it’s what she’s more experienced and it’s “elegant.” With all her competitions, she couldn’t exactly pick a favorite she’s competed in, but she could say, “They’re all a blast!” Caba, the faithful steed, has been leased by Dann since last year and has competed in all five competitions with her. When Caba’s not competing, she stays at the TLC Stables.
Sophomore year, Dann competed in motocross. She began the high-speed sport because her younger brother Josiah (‘19) was interested and so was their dad. Dann said she was “keeping up with the boys”. She competed in only one race but won second. Dann said she enjoyed motocross because, “It makes me feel like a daredevil!”
Dann started theatre in middle school when she starred in “Little Women” with her friend Ronni Fleshman (‘15). Her most recent musical was the “Suessical,” which was also her favorite. She played a bird girl which was the lead group that narrated the tale.
Dann started her plethora of hobbies at the age of three when she started gymnastics. She says the lessons were more for fun than anything else. Dann shortly ended this first hobby at age five.
In elementary, she played basketball, but softball was her main love. She played fifth through sixth as a pitcher, but ended in middle school to join band. She picked up the clarinet and never put it down. Dann also taught herself how to play piano, guitar, flute and the trumpet.
Dann’s hobbies aren’t the only surprising things about her. Her favorite band is the famous boy band One Direction. Dann recently went to Chicago for their 2014 “Where We Are” stadium world tour as a birthday present. She also went to their show in Columbus last summer. She first started listening to them sophomore year and it didn’t take long for her admiration to grow. When she first started listening to them her favorite member was Niall and has stayed as her number one for two years.
Another famous boy band that Dann loves is 5 Seconds of Summer. She liked them last summer when she first saw them, but after a year, she enjoyed them much more. She said this most recent show was more fun because she already knew all their music and remember when they were a smaller group and thought it was cool to see the growth. Dann also added that she couldn’t pick a favorite member.
One of Dann’s stranger interests is watching horror movies. But she doesn’t watch the whole movie, she simply watches only the horrifying scenes on YouTube. Her favorite scary scene was one from Stephen King’s “It”. Dann adds that she actually hates clowns. The most recent scary movie she watched the entirety of was “The Purge”.

Haunted Ohio
By: Kyle Stermer
(Photo: (left to right) Emily Dalton ('15), Megan Hatfield ('15), Regan Turner ('15), scary guy from the Haunted Hoochie, Alexis Absten ('15), Macy Adams ('15), and Belinda Marcum ('15). Photo by J. Hatfield.)
NORTHRIDGE- Halloween is quickly approaching, and one of people’s favorite things to do is go to haunted attractions. There are quite a few here in Ohio.
One of the most popular haunted attraction is the Haunted Hoochie. The Hoochie is located in Pataskala, Ohio. The shows start September 25th, and then they continue every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday until November 1st. From the outside, the Hoochie looks like an old barn and silo. The line is usually pretty long, but they keep you pretty entertained with music, and creatures scaring you. When you go in the Hoochie, you feel very cramped in. You go through tight hallways and see different scenes of scary things. Some of these things include prisons, demon birth, and other very graphic things. Daniel Neff (‘16), says “It’s a great place to go and hang with friends and have a good time, 10/10 would go again.” All in all, the Hoochie is said to be a good place to get your scare on.
Another haunted place is the Haunted prison in Mansfield, Ohio. Unlike the Haunted Hoochie, this attraction adds a little bit of realism in it. The prison is a real prison. It was built in 1886 and closed due to a federal court order. Then they turned it into a haunted house. It is similar to the Haunted Hoochie in, you are not actually going on a ghost hunt. There are still actors that are actually people. Although, they still claim the actual prison to be haunted. The show times are the same as the Haunted Hoochie. You do have to be at least 13 years old to enter with or without a parent. Hugh prentice (‘16), went to last year’s event, and he said “It was a really long line, like almost two hours, but after the real deal it felt worth it.” The actual experience lasts around 45 minutes, but that all depends on how fast you are running.
There are still plenty of haunted places in Ohio, ranging from haunted forests, hayrides, caves, and farms. Wherever you live, there is probably a haunted house near you to enjoy. Who knows, you may even live in one.
